Pamukkale University Department of Chemistry

Since the beginning of history, people have been trying to understand the structure of chemicals. First of all, they sound that some materials could be burned. Later some chemicals were discovered by chance such as a chemical for removing the sourness from grape juice. In the time, substances such as gold, iron, silver, copper, alum, ammonium salts, nitric acid and alloys were discovered by all chemists. However there was still no theory available to explain these substances.

Later on, more experiments were done which explained the theory and structure of materials and this was the beginning of the science we now know as chemistry.
Chemistry is a very important subject because everything in the Universe, including living things, is found to be made up of basic matter. Chemistry is the study of this basic matter. Although much progress has been made in the field of chemistry ,there is still a lot of work to be done.
Chemists have been successful in producing things such as food, medicines, plastics, paints and dyes, ceramics, porcelain, paper, detergents, soap, pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers, cosmatics, batteries, photographic paperand film which people use in everyday life. Now work is needed to produce purer products and obtain better recovery rates as well as removing limescale build-up and corrosion in the industrial processes. A good knowledge of chemistry is essential for this. Chemists are also involved in electro-plating, dyeing processes, medicine and biochemistry.

For these reasons, chemistry graduates can work in industry, laboratories or can carry out research either in the universities, government institutes or in the private sector. It is also possible for them go into business producing their own products. With an additional teacher-training course they can become chemistry teachers or can pursue a career in the University by beginning as a research assistant.
Since 1994, when the Science and Arts Faculty and also the Chemistry Departmant first opened their doors, we have been improving with the addition of new equipment and facilities. Our main aim is to use these new facilties in the best way possible for the public and especially young people.

We, as a Chemistry Department, understand the necessity of knowledge and these days, in the technological age, we think the best way to gain that knowledge is university. For these reason Chemistry Department is concerned with education, research and its application.
